Open Caption and Audio Description

Open Caption and Audio Description
Audio description (AD) refers to an additional narration track for blind and visually impaired consumers of visual media. It consists of a narrator talking through the presentation, describing what is happening on the screen during the natural pauses in the audio, and sometimes during dialogue if deemed necessary. The accessible locations use the same DTS cinemas access system to enable the signal to be transferred to the headset worn by the user.

Features that have (OCAD) prior to the film title have both the Open Caption and Audio Description available.

Open Captioned and/or Audio Description movies are held 6 times a week on Thursday morning, Friday evening, Sunday afternoon, Monday evening, Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning at the following sites;

Hoyts Carousel, WA
Hoyts Tweed City, NSW

As Hoyts is transition to digital cinema the existing Open Caption and Audio Description systems (OCAD) at the sites listed above we be replaced with the new Captiview system for Closed Captions and digital Audio Description (CC/AD). This will mean that there will be a recess of accessible access for a period of time between the removal of OCAD and the installation of the CC/AD. At present it is anticipated that Carousel will transition by June 2012 and Tweed City by December 2012.
