Synopsis

For 27-year-old Ben (Josh Lawson), life couldn’t be better. A well paid job, friends, parties, girls and nothing to tie him down. But when he is invited back to his old school to join several other ex-students including Alex (Rachael Taylor) and Jim (Ed Kavalee) in talking about their personal achievements, something goes wrong. Ben is the only speaker not to be asked a question by the school kids. This triggers a year of soulsearching and looking for answers in all the wrong places.

From his best friend Andy (Christian Clark) whose solution is that they both take another holiday, to his mentor Sam (Lachy Hulme) who loans him a sports car in the belief that there’s nothing like excessive speed to resolve emotional turmoil. Not even Ben’s father (Rob Carlton) or friends Nick (Daniel Henshall) and Em (Felicity Ward) can offer much in the way of meaningful guidance. Of course, it’s not easy seeking enlightenment in nightclubs, or on the ski fields of New Zealand, and when you start dating a Russian tennis star things can get really complicated. As the poster boy for a generation desperate to tick every box, Ben begins to suspect that the meaning of life may well reside in the things he's already doing - and a girl he used to know.

As expected from a Working Dog production, the humour in this film had me smiling most of the time. However, I was dissapointed as I felt some aspects of the plot and characters could have been improved. For instance, we don't really see who Alex really is and why Ben has such a strong interest in her.

I wasn't too sure when I started watching this movie whether I might have been wasting my time. I'm a big fan of The Dish and this film didn't appear to have the charm of that movie. But the more I watched the more I was drawn in as Ben tries to work out what his life is all about. He's torn between his shallow existence and wanting to do something worthwhile but just can't break out of staying where he's comfortable. Once Rachael Taylor arrives on the scene the movie lifts. A great pity her Charlies Angel remake was such bad TV. Taylor lights up a screen and is wonderful as Ben's "muse". Josh Lawson is very good as Ben too and there's some great support characters. Turns out it's a very good Aussie movie.

I have very mixed feelings about this film.... I hate to give a negative review of anything that Rob Stitch and Working Dog produce... I love their work and see their work as the pinnacle of what Australia has to offer however this film left me wanting a lot more. It's not terrible but it actually feels a Melbourne based episode of sex in the city from a males perspective. I felt empty at the end of it - though the 'mentor' is a great character and the end credits have you leaving the cinema smiling.... Please Working Dog - do more
